According to The Washington Post police arrested 32-year-old Gustavo Perez
Arriaga, an undocumented immigrant, on 28 Dec for homicide in connection with the shooting death of 33-year-old Ronil Singh, a California police officer.
Reportedly, the local Stanislaus County Police Sheriff Adam Christianson suggested the state's efforts to protect the undocumented immigrants could have contributed to the killing. He indicated Perez Arriaga publicized his gang affiliation and had been arrested twice for driving under the influence. The Sharif indicated Law enforcement had been prohibited from aiding in deporting the imigrant because of sanctuary laws, and indicated the encounter could have been prevented if Arriaga had been deported. “I’m suggesting that the outcome could have been different if law enforcement wasn’t restricted, prohibited or had their hands tied because of political interference.”
Sharif Christianson indicated Mr. Arriaga had illegally entered the United States at the Arizona border and was attempting to flee to his home country, Mexico, when he was apprehended at a residence in Bakersfield, Calif.
Police also arrested Arriaga’s brother, and a co-worker, for aiding in Mr. Arriaga’s escape after Officer Singh was shot, both of whom are resididing in the country illegally. Additionally 5 other individuals were arrested for aiding and abetting including Arriaga’s girlfriend.
Officer Singh joined the Newman police department in 2011, and was killed after he
stopped Perez Arriaga early in the morning on 26 December for suspicion of drunken driving. Officer Singh called out “shots fired” over the radio, and was found at the scene with gunshot wounds. Singh was later pronounced dead at a hospital after attempts to recesitate him failed.
ABC Action News reports Officer Singh is survived by his wife and his six-month-old son.
